Your Preferences Are Your Decision
You may have heard people talk about preference deals, but in the WA State Election for the Lower House, parties do not control where your preferences go - only you do. Some people have been asking, "Where are your preferences flowing?", but the truth is, preferences only flow based on how you number your ballot.
How Preferential Voting Works
In State Lower House elections (Legislative Assembly), we use a full preferential voting system. This means you get to number every box on the ballot paper in order of your preference.
- If a candidate receives more than 50% of the votes (an absolute majority), they are elected.
- If no one reaches 50%, the candidate with the fewest votes is eliminated, and their votes are redistributed based on the second preferences.
- This process continues until one candidate reaches a majority and is elected.
This system ensures that your vote still counts, even if your first-choice candidate is not elected.
Make your vote count!
