Volunteers who want Cottesloe community independent candidate Rachel Horncastle to get elected to state parliament lined up to offer their help on Sunday.
Dr Horncastle launched her campaign outside The Orange Box at Leighton Beach, with about 120 people turning up.
“It was fantastic,” she said “The weather gods smiled on us, and there was actually a massive turnout that exceeded my expectations.
“We ran out of T-shirts."
“There was a lot of positive feedback, and we’ve got lots more volunteers as well. It was really lovely. It was perfect.”
She said the launch was held at Leighton because a lot of people who live in North Fremantle do not realise they are in the state electorate of Cottesloe.
She has been invited to events in the northern part of the electorate, which includes south City Beach.
A Christmas-themed beach event, with DJ and sausages, will be held on the grass north of Clancy’s at City Beach on December 19 from 6pm.
Dr Horncastle said that at The Orange Box, people signed up to knock on doors and deliver pamphlets: “People were saying ‘This is really exciting. Thank you for stepping up. We’re so pleased to have an alternative to vote for’."
“I feel there’s a real groundswell of people wanting to see politics done differently. You know, done for the right reasons.”
The state election is due to be held on March 8 next year.
One other candidate is campaigning in the electorate, Sandra Brewer for the Liberal Party, who defeated sitting member David Honey for pre-selection.
